The GIARDIA/CRYPTOSPORIDIUM CHEK® test is an enzyme immunoassay for the qualitative detection of Giardia cyst and Cryptosporidium oocyst antigen in human fecal specimens. It is indicated for use as an aid in the diagnosis of patients with diarrhea suspected of Giardia and/or Cryptosporidium gastrointestinal infections.

The GIARDIA/CRYPTOSPORIDIUM CHEK® uses monoclonal and polyclonal antibodies to cell-surface antigens of Giardia and an oocyst antigen of Cryptosporidium. The Microassay Plate in the kit contains immobilized monoclonal antibodies against the antigens and the Conjugate consists of polyclonal antibodies against the antigens.

In the assay, an aliquot of a diluted fecal specimen is transferred to a microassay well. The immobilized monoclonal antibodies bind the Giardia and Cryptosporidium antigens if they are present. Conjugate is added and binds to any antigen captured by the immobilized antibodies. Unbound materials are removed by washing. Following the addition of Substrate, a color develops in the presence of enzyme-antibody-antigen complexes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can I read the GIARDIA/CRYPTOSPORIDIUM CHEK® test visually?
A: Yes, the back of the instructional card contains a color chart. This guide will enable you to interpret the test results without the aid of a spectrophotometer.

Q: What type of sample can I use in the GIARDIA/CRYPTOSPORIDIUM CHEK® test?
A: Samples that arrive in fixatives such as 10% formalin or SAF and those that are either fresh or frozen can be used. Follow the package insert carefully to ensure proper dilution of samples. Fresh or frozen samples require a different dilution than preserved samples. Remember to cover the plate to prevent evaporation of samples that are in formalin based preservatives as evaporation of the samples will cause them to adhere to the plate and make washing extremely difficult.

Q: What does a positive result on the GIARDIA/CRYPTOSPORIDIUM CHEK® mean?
A: A positive result on the GIARDIA/CRYPTOSPORIDIUM CHEK® means that either Giardia cyst antigen or Cryptosporidium spp. oocyst antigen has been detected in the fecal sample.

Q: Will the GIARDIA/CRYPTOSPORIDIUM CHEK® specifically identify which parasite is present?
A: No. Additional testing is necessary to identify the specific parasite present in a sample.
